From Heather’s Desk

In collaboration with a non-profit provider, this project’s goal was to translate advanced clinical and therapeutic concepts to practical suggestions for every-day work with people experiencing complex substance and mental health concerns. This project included a series of 37 short 1-2 page articles on topics such as goal setting, responding to ambivalence, language and stigma, rethinking terms such as “noncompliance” or “attention seeking”. Articles were distributed to staff on a bi-weekly basis. Topics were collaboratively decided by staff, managers and Dr. Fulton. Staff included social workers, housing support workers and peer support providers. Written content was later supported by in person training workshops and discussion.

Trauma Informed Practice Tips (TIP Tips)

A collaborative writing project with another psychologist, Dr. Heather Baitz, and other guest writers a series of short “tips” were written as part of an overarching trauma informed practice initiative within a health authority service. TIP tips were short (1-2min) practical suggestions or considerations with the aim to inform helping professionals about trauma informed care, its relevance to work with people experiencing complex concurrent disorders, and practical suggestions for implementation. All TIP tips also aimed to help foster a workplace culture of psychological safety and appreciation by including staff recognition.
